FAQs

  • My students are required to take weekly lessons. Most beginner students take 30 minute lessons. Most advanced students take 45 or 60 minute lessons. My rate is $60/hr. Students are sent an invoice at the beginning of each month to pay for the month in advance. I have a sensible cancellation policy and work with your vacation and travel schedules.

  • No. Time doesn’t permit me to travel to my student’s houses for lessons. I teach in my home on the East Side of Madison near the Metro Mart on Cottage Grove Rd.

  • Owning an instrument is a critical first step to beginning music lessons. Students need to enjoy the way they sound and enjoy playing a quality instrument. This helps develop a musical ear and proper technique. If money is an issue, there are many cost-effective options for beginning lessons. Electric pianos with weighted keys are an appropriate substitution for a piano and a practice pad can work in place of a drum. Eventually, investing in a high quality instrument is a worthy next step for those who can afford it.

  • I schedule regular studio recitals for my students. Since I keep me studio small and manageable, it gives all my students opportunities to perform multiple pieces on a single concert. This was not a skill I learned until I was in college.

  • I do offer a free phone or in-person consultation for interested families. This is not exactly a free lesson, but a chance for us to meet and for me to answer any questions you may have about getting started.

  • Beginner students don’t need to practice anymore than 5-15 minutes per day. As you advance, that time will gradually increase.

  • Every kid is different! There is no correct answer here. I generally don’t recommend starting kids on lessons if they can’t read yet (but even this suggestion isn’t always true). The general rule is that the younger the student is, the more parental support they will need when practicing. You can’t expect a four or five year old to practice well on their own.

  • NO! You’re never too old to enrich yourself with music. Some of my favorite students have been adults. Follow your dreams and do something interesting with your time! Music can definitely fit into your life. If you dedicate some time to your practice, you might be shocked to see how fast you progress.
